Update from India

Dear Friends,

We have now been in India for a bit over one week.  Our journey has been excellent.  We arrived in Delhi and then drove up to Hardwar on the second day where Liberty’s ashes were placed in the Ganga river.  Hardwar is a very sacred place where many of Liberty’s ancestors were placed in the river before him.  While we were there, we obtained an original log-book which had records of Liberty’s great grandfather and other relatives.  Now Liberty’s name, and those who accompanied him there, are in the same book.  We also traveled up to Neelkanth to a temple which took us through the mountains where we saw many wild monkeys, birds, and amzing natural beauty.  We even stopped and relaxed with a friendly cow on the side of the road.  We also visited the sacred city of Rishekesh that is built along the river.  Indeed Liberty would have loved the natural beauty of this region.  Hopefully we can post some pictures and more updates soon.  Thank you all for keeping Liberty in your thoughts.

I remember about a month ago talking to my niece and telling her that it seems interesting that whenever someone passes away, they are always spoken about and remembered in a positive light and nothing but good things are said about them. If the passing of that person makes the news, family and friends are always saying how special this person was and how they were a genuinely good person. I told her that if I ever passed away and the story made the news that it would be funny that if on air, she told everybody that I was a jerk and that the loss is no big deal, we both laughed.

I found out about Liberty’s passing last week. I knew Liberty for a short time. We met at Mt. Sac, through our love of hardcore and philosophy we enganged in many conversations. I met his friends Jake and Tom, all equally cool guys. Through the events of life I lost contact with Liberty but I would always think to myself, “whatever happened to that guy?” I remeber talking to Liberty about his veganism and being impressed with his defiant yet tolerant stance on animal rights. The hardcore scene has members who choose to live a cruel free lifestyle, but sadly the majority seem to do it just to point fingers at people, and to ride around on a moral high horse. But with Liberty this was non-existant. He never made you feel like you were indifferent to him. If anything, his peaceful nature and compassion made me think to myself that maybe there was something to his veganism. In discussions I was always impressed and inspired by his deep compassion for all living things. TRULY IT WAS AMAZING! To Liberty it wasn’t some wishy washy, spiritual nonsense. He sincerely believed, and acted that all life was beautiful and unique. I got this from Liberty in the time that I knew him.

I still find it interesting that when someone passes away, and if that passing makes the news. It creates a reaction where people say that a good person was lost and that there was no one like them. Not to undermine their sentiment or invalidate their words. But Liberty was a truly unique human being and a beautiful soul. I knew him for a short time and often remembered how this was probably one of the most compassionate people that I would ever meet. To his family and friends, I am sorry for your loss.
